the engine would be a b18a1

im assuming your friend probably has a 3rd gen prelude (88-91) in which case he would have a b20a5 or b21a1 (could be a b20a3 but that would be carbed). if your wondering if any parts are compatible. NO. the 3rd gen prelude engines are considered to be bastard Bs as 99.8% of the parts will not work with any other b-series engine.

easiest way to check what engine you and your friend have would be to check the engine stamp. its a flat 1"x1" square just to the left of the exhaust manifold. you may need some cleaner and a wire brush to read it though.

Ya its a b18a1. Follow the speedo cable out the fire wall to your trans see if its plugged in properly. If thats not the problem you need to pull your gauge cluster its pretty simple just dont force anything. and make sure when your reaching behind the cluster you dont pull on the speedo cable you have find the clamp and undo it. Alot of the times people pull the cluster out and pull the whole clamp with it DONT DO THAT. or there hands are too fat and cant plug it back in lol. if all is good you need a new cluster

disconnect the speedo cable and push it inside when u have the gauge ready to come out then u can easily stick ur hand behind and see the clamp.
