89 5speed oddities

I just got an 89 teg, and the trans. makes some weird ass noises...
well not so weird is the fact the the 3rd gear syncro is worn... but 5th makes this strange whining/whirring that only happens when you are maintaining or increasing RPM...
i just changed the trans. oil with Pennzoil syncromesh (only because the dealerships, parts departments are closed on Sundays)...
but, are either of the problems common?

The synchro rings are a normal thing to have wear down in a transmission. The whirring sound in 5th is a sign of some worn out bearings inside of the transmission. It is normal for the bearings to need replacing eventually in a trans also. Two ways to fix the problems are to rebuild the transmission (both synchro rings and bearings) or to replace the transmission.
