2nd gear out

I just bought a 1990 teg rs with a b18a1 not shure what tranny but when i shift into.2nd. gear it is unresponsive any sugestions on where to start to find the problem? The rest of the gears shift fine. also it has a short throw shifter and dual disc clutch could it be an issue with cable adjustment?

what do you mean un responsive.. as in you give gas and get nothing? please provide better details.

I just looked at it and the shifter cable is jerry rigged with zip ties and hose clamps where it conects to the tranmission. could this be the issue? I am unfamiliar with integra shifter it is much different. then my accord

I am leaning towards an issue inside the trans.

From my understanding (and I can be completely wrong so please feel free to correct) There are two levers for gear selection, one chooses the gear and the other works when you move the shifter side to side to move along the next gear set.

There is also the shift lever that applies pressure to the pressure plate to disengage to allow you to shift then engage.

If you are having an issue with just 2nd gear but you are able to shift 3rd to 4th that would rule out and of the gear selector cables, and since you can shift from gear to gear that rules out the shift lever for the pressure plate this just leaves second gear being completely tore up.

Again if I am wrong someone please correct me.

sounds to me like 2nd is completely shot out. Generally on older cable style honda transmissions the synchro goes followed by a "chipping " feeling switching to a gear , followed by straight up grinding, followed up by grinding and popping out of gear, followed by the gear teeth eventually chipping and breaking off to having nothing in the affected gear... or not even being able to shift into that gear.

you may want to scour craigslist or salvage yards for a spare transmission and see if you can pull the gear you need. I'd also suggest replacing the synchros while you are in there..

Turned out when they installed the short throw shifter they completely left off the front bracket that holds the shifter in so it had a lot of up and down play i didn't know about because gravity naturaly pulls the shifter down add wore out bushings and you get the problem i had. now that i know this going to 2nd i can pull up on shifter when i shift and it goes into 2nd every time. My next pay check i am replacing the front bracket that's missing and overhauling all the bushing with race bushing and doing a fluid change on tranny before i drive it again. thanks for the help i figured i would share the issue it turned out to be
