just recently bought a 2000 gsr with a jdm b18c. heard that this may be legal because you are just replacing it with the same engine. others say that its not true? cop issues? any comments, advice? anything will help thanks

it is legal because its a replacement motor. A JDM B18C in a DC4 does require you to BAR the car but not a DC2. However you will need to do the following, get a USDM Vtec Solenoid with the oil pressure sensor and a US ECU

Yes and no. Smog will be fine, but cops will still hastle you because you drive a honda. Sad truth about owning these cars. But they wont bother with that, only if you are caught racing or have some crazy mods done will they actually care about what you have under the hood

thats the differene in the solenoid, if you have a green plug you are good to go. Check to see what ecu you have in there already if its OBD2a or OBD2b. That will make a difference when purchasing, also if you are still uneasy about the legality of the swap you can always take it to your local CA Air Resources BAR station and have it inspected for legality. Or, you can take it to CHP to get Blue Tag inspected. But it isnt necessary.

Dylan, don't forget about the oil pumps. The USDM one has the Crank Fluctuation Sensor. So you'll need an oil pump, sensor (I believe) and a timing cover because there is something different about the JDM one (probably a mount that isn't there). You can do a bypass trick but I did read about it not working for some people. Also (on the B18C Type r IM) there needs to be a way for the EVAP to be plugged in. It might not be on the USDM one but I would probably guess it's there.

I found a thread on HT that outlined how to make it completely legal with no codes or anything. Just in case I decide to do a swap this winter mine will be squeaky clean. No ghetto swaps for me. lol

I don't know about the deal with Cali regulations but if you use a conversion harness and run an OBD1 ecu then you don't have to worry about the CFK sensor since they weren't on OBD1's and as far as the EVAP purge cannister there will be a place to plug the vacuum line on the intake manifold. It's a small plug on the side the throttle opening faces.

@ samurai blue. So their is no need to have a paper from a reff at a bar station saying it legal? How does the blue tag inspection work?

you can get one if you want to. Blue tag is where the CHP gives you a tag to make sure stuff is legal in your car.
