1990 missing idle

my car is missing at idle i hear it thru the tail pipe and also if i rev up the car when i take my foot off the gas rpms drop low almost and sometimes die im goin to try and do the timming see if it helps but any other ideas?

Check the spark and fuel pressure. Timing is good to check too, but I would probably check the others first. Sometimes the spark seems okay and is just a bit hesitant, that has fooled me before. Ignition coils and ignitors go out commonly on these. Have you done a tuneup or anything like that in recent memory?

I would probably do the fuel filter, spark plug wires, distributor cap and rotor too.
