1989 RS with three engine problems

I did a search and didn't see my specific problems listed so hopefully someone can offer some suggestions. Thanks in advance.

1st problem: Idle speed - it idles just below 750 rpm when warm and is a bit rough. If I use the throttle to bump the speed up to 750 rpm the roughness goes away. I tried to adjust idle speed with the air inlet screw but it didn't seem to affect the idle speed. Any thoughts?

2nd problem: high speed miss - when cruising in fifth gear around 70 MPH, I can feel a slight miss. If I change the speed slightly, up or down, the problem goes away. I was wondering if the throttle position sensor might be wearing out since I do spend a fair amount of driving time at that speed.....

3rd problem: just started doing this - hesitation under mild acceleration (below 3000 rpm), like the engine is cutting out ever so briefly, but then runs fine. Also wondering if this could be a throttle position sensor going bad...

No illuminated trouble light, so any suggestions?

Thanks again.

Hello DA3,

Thank you for responding. The answer is no, the idle is steady. I did have the problem you mention once before and it took the dealer 3 days to find the problem - if I recall correctly, that was caused by an intermittent sensor, though I don't recall which one.

I can't remember exactly but I think it has something to do with the idle screw port. The freeway speed condition may be a faulty ignitor or something in the distributor. It's been a long time and I can't quite remember. Do some searching as these symptoms were common in older Hondas and acuras.

Hmmm,

My car has now developed another problem! Erratic idle when cold and the cutting out below 3000 RPM has gotten worse. Some of the checking that I have done indicates that I replaced the EACV about 6 years ago - which didn't solve the then warm idle variation, nor did a new O2 sensor or another ECU. The dealer finally traced the problem to an intermittant coolant temp sensor. My coolant level is good, and no obvious air leaks (I know that isn't good enough but I need daylight to do a better job of checking). I have noticed that one of the injectors has been leaking (fuel staining underneath) but am skeptical that would cause the idle speed fluctuations. I have replaced the Igniter before and was told it either works or it doesn't. Likewise I've replaced the fuel pump before and the car seems to accelerate well so I doubt it is a fuel starvation issue. I also recently replaced the Dist. cap and rotor (rotor went bad - 2 piece construction and they came apart!) Relatively recently I looked at the throttle body and it was pretty clean. So now I'm wondering about either the Idle Up Valve or the Idle Up Solenoid Valve. Still no illuminated trouble light either......

Any other suggestions? Thanks.

I'm experiencing similar problems with my 87. It's going into the shop tomorrow and I will post the diagnosis after my mechanic has a chance to look it over. Research I have done points toward a faulty IACV or problem with the vacuum lines. I don't know much about cars, so I can only repeat what I have read elsewhere.
