My voltage regulator went out on my '89 TEG. My altenator is charging battery but at different levels at different rpm. At 3500rpm, my battery and headlight warning lights flicker. Tested alternator, it's fine. How do I replace the voltage regulator without replacing the alternator? My buddy can get me a new regulator cheap.

Its in the alternator. You have to take it off and open it up. Its very easy to replace once the alt is off the car.

..? Try checking the 3 system grounds first because that very weird for something like that to just randomly go out? make sure the grounds are good, the battery is the right size and amperage just to make sure its not something stupid

1st gen's are kinda notorious for having bad grounds. Mine did
