Lost my job unfortunately because I have a piece of shit envy 3 and it turned off on it's own so I missed my alarm and lost my job, anyway, now that I am jobless I have been throwing ideas around to make extra money.

I love detailing cars and thought I could put some ads up on craigslist for interior and exterior detailing (hand washing, tar, bug, adhesive removal etc, waxing, wheel detailing, carpet cleaning, etc)

I need some advice though, anyone have tips for how I should go about approaching this? What should I invest in and what are some things I can do.

Have not really done anything like this before so any and all tips will be appreciated.

I also need to figure out how to charge.. I was thinking just an hourly rate but am not sure. Thanks

Doubt I'll get unemployment, it was also a temporary job, which I got fired from, so doubt I can collect unemployment.

I think in CA if you work for 3 months and you legally worked there, and you get fired /or laid off, you can collect unemployment for a short time / until you get another job or in this case "Business."

Cripton - I work at a payroll company, I know all about SUI and such. You're only eligible after working a certain amount of time AND losing your job through no fault of your own. Had he been let go because they went out of business or were downsizing, he'd be eligible. Unfortunately, he was fired for missing a shift, so he cannot collect.

On topic: message jordan about the equipment you might need etc, you need to seriously sit down and think of a business plan. I am a small business owner and as much as you want to go right out, you need to seriously look at the costs. you'll have equipment and the tools etc, do you have money to start that? You'll need a customer base to, most people look at people they know and word of mouth etc. Get some references, look at pricing in your area.

Whats going to happen when the customer doesn't like how it came out? Or if something goes wrong? I had the chance but backed out of it.

If you really think about it you would have to have a good amount of customers from day to day.

If you really love it get a job at a place. Thats exactly what im doing now. Plus if you do it yourself you will have to buy all of the products too and that will add up.

First you should do your own cars and take pictures of them BEFORE and AFTER.
Post them on CL and send it to other forums and the BEST thing is word of mouth.
Do a good job and dont over-charge and you'll get repeated customers.

Again word of mouth is probably the best advertisement you'll get and best of all its FREE.
You would believe if your friend referred you to someone vs you going to a stranger.

FYI if you are just starting out and have absolutely no clientel, do not expect, from teh jump for this to be a money maker, but overtime it can be if you market well and do good/great work. Most of who i got were friends of friends who saw my work and loved it.

Your biggest part of what you are going to need starting out, a good vaccuum. keep your eye open for one at Sears. i got mine a 6.5 hp i believe 13 gallon wet/dry vac for like $70-80 on sale. this will be good for your regular vaccuum and also shampoo jobs, if you care to take on such a task. the more you do different/certain cars the better feel you will get on how to get the job done RIGHT and with better time.

other than that i'm going to give you this link from some research i did on the maxima forums, this will be the best help for you in your endeavor for getting this done. its very informative and its in depth (alot of reading)

if you have specific questions that are not in that thread i gave you, PM me and ill try to help you out. just make sure you read through it
