Subwoofer Recommendation?

Soon i'm going to be upgrading my system. I'm either going to get a new pioneer head unit for around $200 or a used clarion or pioneer DVD for close to the same price. I'm staying with the stock speakers at least for now, but i will probably upgrade them in the future. So my question is this: there is only one audio shop in my area, and they don't have a huge selection of subwoofers. Would you guys who know about subs recommend 2 12" kicker comps? The shop has a deal for the two 12" with a box (sealed i think) and a decent amp (i think its kenwood) for $275. And if i bought that he would help me with the installation, which is a plus for me. Are the kicker comps good SQ at all? I was looking at JL subs before, but the only JL the store has is one 12" in a ported box and with a amp for $350. I forget what model it is...What would you guys recommend from these choices? Or should I order subs online?

Another thing, I think the store owner has other subs in the back not in boxes yet, if I wanted to get one or two of those would you recommend a sealed or ported box? I heard sealed = better SQ. I am really trying to get as little distortion as possible with the sub. Thanks for the advice

well my friend ported is for obnoxiously loud bass that will bust ur eardrums i had a sealed box with 2 alpine type e's and i swear by alpine as being the best brand for SQ i had type s door speakers (dual component for my highs and mids) i had type r's for my rear dash speakers and the subs for bass and i had an alpine head unit as well i felt that pairing up all ur stuff makes it sound better (my opinion) the only thing i didnt have alpine was the amp which was a hifonics crunch amp 1500watts if you are a person who cares about sound alot i would def do some research and get a good sound system for your car itll make a huge difference instead of throwing things together

:thumbs up:

Im looking for more sound quality then loudness. But the JL sub which is made for SQ is in a ported box...and the two 12" kickers which I'm guessing are louder are in the sealed box, so it is backwards. Would a ported box distort the JLs sq at all...?

What about the shops choices? 2 kicker comps or the JL..? Are the kicker comps decent? They seem pretty cheap compared to the rest of kickers subs (and good quality subs in general)

sounded quality i go with jl. i have 1 12" recently installed and it is loud to the point of impressive(however I keep it at low levels). Can shake your mirrors if you ever want it to. But it is very precise in its hits, never misses a beat. And gets the full range of notes. It was expensive, but you pay for what you get. And I got exactly what I wanted, definitely suggest JL products all the way

Good to hear...how much did you pay for yours? Is it a sealed or ported box?

I have two kicker comp vr 12's with a sealed box and a kicker zx300 amp.
It's actually like 350 watts or something like that and I really like em because they wont burn a hole in your wallet. Also because they are sealed, they do sound pretty good and with the songs I listen to, my neighbors can hear me before I turn on my street. :suprise:

Im pretty sure I have some pics of em in my car thread

I have two 10" Rockford Fosgate's in my Integra- sealed box. They sound pretty good and bump pretty hard. The sealed box is really nice for sound quality. I have two 10" JBL's in my Blazer with a ported box and when I installed them I could immediately tell the difference with the sound quality between ported and sealed boxes.

I say order online- get a sealed box and enjoy the bass.

id get a ported box. probably because i keep blowing subs in a sealed one.

ive totaled a 10" alpine-R (1500 watts max @ 500rms) ripped the cone from the magnet spring and the edge of the cone material and a soundstream t4 10 (1600 watts max @ 800rms)

i had a kenwood mono block amp. it was a bit too powerful for the alpine, i admit..
1100 watts max at 550rms
but i set it to not hit that hard. and yet they both still ripped. oh well.

If you have an 1100 watt amp then maybe that is what blew them..? Ive never heard of sealed boxes causing subs to break. Did you give the subs more then the RMS?

Ported box. For the sub the amp abd a deck plus installation it came out to 900 haha jl is expensive but completely worth it
Yeah thats what Ive heard..but then I guess the JL 12 in + amp deal for $350 is pretty good. I think thats what i'm going to go with, thanks everybody for the suggestions

That car you smoked!
I have 2-12's Polk Audio Momo's, 860W RMS Infinity mono channel amp in a ported box with 4 gauge amp kit. Damn I love this system. I am actually wanting to sell it so if you are by some chance located in North Texas, maybe we can do business. PM me if so.
