header => cat prob

hey guys. i recently purchased an OBX highflow cat/converter to replace the old one that is crusting off bit by bit. at the same time i bought an aftermarket header. little did i realize (my own fault) that the collecter on the header is 2.5in and is much larger than the cat converter inlet.

once again, the main problem I have, is that I live in Germany, so an autoshop here is outrageous and parts are not abundant. what should i be looking at right now? does anyone sell reducers? like a 2.5>2.0? should i just drill holes in the flange and try to jam it together with bolts? any suggestions or experience with something like this? i'll post pics later to give you a better idea. thanks

nate

WOW... not a good position to be in...

either going to have to cut off the flange on the cat or buy the correct header... Not many other choices...

Another one would be to cut off both flanges, get a reducer pipe and weld it all together :)

A reducer wouldn't be a good idea. Bottle-necking never leads to good things OP. You need a 2.5" flange welded onto the cat and a 2.5" exhaust. Or return the header, your choice.

will try to post some pics tomorrow (no camera sorry). i took a look at the header outlet and the cat inlet.

the OBX cat says it has 2.5 inlet and outlet, butit seems as though the flanges are made for the stock system. after matching up the header and cat, it seems like it might actually work. the two flanges don't but up completely, but niether does my stock cat and header (99GSR). i'll try to post some pics tomorrow to show what i'm talking about.

BigMac i hear you and you're right, bottlenecking is never the "best" choice. you don't live in germany and i doubt you would ever be willing to pay 180euro ($260) to have a flange welded on your cat. after i post pics, i'll just need some opinions on whether it will work for now or not.

this is the Cat that I bought. anyone have any real life personal experience with these?

i say.....

looks like you got 2.5" pipes buddy!

or return the cat.

i'm with biggiemac, bottlenecking is bad.

as for if it will be ok for now?

no.

pics... finally

sorry about the delay, but here are the pics that i took. here is the OBX cat.

the cat definitely has 2.5in piping but the flange is tapered.

the end of the header is not.

you can see that the two ends will come together, but not completely. perhaps bolting them would get it much closer?

the other problem is that the flange holes do not line up.

i'm going to have to drill holes in the flange of the header so that they can match up to the converter. not a big deal. i guess my question is, what do you guys think? would bolting them up, nice and tight, the way they are work? or would it sound like an exhaust leak? would i be better off getting a 2.5 > 2.25 reducer and mating them up that way? i will be putting the cat on this week. hopefully... it fits. anyone see any problem with that converter fitting on a 99 GSR? let me konw what you guys think?

kinda looks like you should have a donut gasket (flange gasket) on the end of the header, would match better where is counts, i have to use one myself, idk something to look into
