so i have looked all over this forum and google. and still cannot find the answer to my problem... i had changed my axelsabout 2 weeks ago and forgot to put the inner race on the front passenger side.. i realized it after going to the store and comming back. i immediately put the race back on and tightened it down with a new nut. however about 3 days later as im driving to work, i noticed a metal kind of noise that would come and go. its not constant but it sounds like something spinning or something... doesnt sound like hardened or thick metal but something a little more fragile. i lifted it up and checked the bearing by tuggin at the wheel 9 and 3 and 12 and 6 . i tried spinning the tire but coldnt identify the sound and it only starts after i drive a couple miles.

any help, insight, or tips would be greatly apprecieated.

Is your car ABS? ( Anti Lock Brakes )

Sometimes You get ABS axles on a non ABS car and the ABS ring on the axle will grind a bit on everything around it.

It looks like a gear going all the way around the axle on the tire side.

i thought i had specified that it wasnt abs when i bought them but ill take a look tomorrow after work... is there any way to bypass it or remove it without comprimising the axel.. ..... today i drove it around and it seemed to do it even more.

so there is a ring in between the axel and the hub that is slipping or something... after a little research i believe it is a hubcentric ring. can anyone verify this for me.. also how do i fix the problem. can it be removed without conciquence

Unless the reluctor ring on the ABS axle is grinding against the knuckle, it's not your issue.
Sometimes you have to get the car on a lift and use a stethoscope to find a bad bearing.
Check the brake dust shield to make sure you didnt bend it. If that gets bent it can hit the rotor and make a metallic scraping sound.

i put it on my lift and pulled the wheel off ... when i spin the axle i can see it dragging on the ring thing (not abs ring). for every one rotation of the axle the ring does like 3/4 but it makes the metal scraping metal sound. it sits perfectly in the back side of the hub and almost touches the bearing. i tried searching for the part so i could find the name of it and all i came up with was hubcentric ring but i thought those were to alighn the tire.

yea the camera on my phone is all scratched up so i cant take the pic.but i think i figured out what happened. i had a friend helping me out when we changed the axles. he usually knows what hes doing, but this time i guess not. the axle was wayy bad.. like fell apart in my hand bad. and the cap that is pressed on to the end of the axle had fallen out. he thought that it was supposed to sit in the hub so it was like having 2 axle ends on it and the hub sasnt seated against the bearingright...i knew i should have checked his work.

Looking for my next Teg..
just a tridbit of advice.... do not buy re-manufactured axles form autozone or anywhere else... remans are notorious for falling apart... best option is a new axle or aftermarket axle like the ones raxles sells...

I didn't want to make a new thread so im bumping this one ! lol:p
I just bought a set of rims from someone. there were two bald ones so I replaced them and the other two had decent amount of tread left . I tried them on for the first time last weekend and realized while I was driving at low speeds the steering wheel would shake and every other second the car would feel like it went over a speed bump . so I checked them out and found out they were cupping and weren't balanced. im kinda tight on cash right now so I want to try to eliminate buying two more tires right now (IF POSSIBLE) does anyone think I could balance the wheels too help or even fix the problem ?

I dont think u need new tires for the other ones, as long as they are in good condition. Just remember, fresh treads go in front, older/worn treads go in the back. Of course it'd be best to have ALL new tires and rotate them.

What do you mean by cupping? Like as the wheel rotates, it actually goes up and down like oval instead of circular? Are they aftermarket rims? Almost all aftermarket rims need centric rings, and im guessing your set up is in serious need of those. Balancing will help, but you'd still have some minimal vibration without centric rings.

No... You need a balancing machine that will tell you where to place the weights and how much weigh you need to add.

Bad tires go in front. New tires go in rear. Reason being. If you have a blow out which will most likely happen to the older tire. You can control it if it were to happen in the front. No the rear. At least that's out company policy at Tire Kingdom/NTB/BigOTires.
