Synthetic Oils

Currently I am running Regular 5W30 Oil in my 1991 RS. I am probbaly going to switch to Synthetic oil when I change it next. I've been looking at Royal Purple oils because I've heard that they are by far the best. So my question is: Is it worth it to buy Royal Purple? or should I go with a cheaper Synthetic or even Semi-Synthetic oil. Thanks for the help guys.

Fuck Royal Purple, Mobil 1 is what I would go with. You do know once you go synthetic you have to stay synthetic.

Mobil 1 is probably the best oil to use with Honda engines. I'd go with Mobil 1 synthetic. That Royal Purple oil seems to be a waste of money.

I use Mobil 1. I've never heard anything bad about Royal Purple, but the stuff is so damn expensive and not as easy to find as Mobil 1. I think I would only go to a level of oil like Royal Purple if I had a really highly modded engine that required superior lubrication at higher than normal engine temps (as would be the case in a high compression and/or highly boosted engine) and high resistance to oil breakdown. I mean, Royal Purple is never a bad thing for any engine, but I think you gotta weigh benefit vs. cost for your personal requirements of need and funds to spend. I wouldn't exactly call it "settling" for Mobil 1, it's definitley one of the best synthetic oils on the market. I think in the synthetic oil market, as in all markets, you get what you pay for.

i just changed from quakerstate advanced to moble 1. ive heard good things about moble 1. and as far as quakerstate advanced, i didnt like it. it caused my oilpan gasket to leak. otherwise i couldnt tell a differanance from stock (not that i think you can).

My car gets Mobil Non-synthetic, and shes made it past 280k miles so shit seems to be working.

Murasame how many miles do you have on your motor? you should'nt be running a synthetic oil if you have high miles. you should get a high mileage motor oil. the systhetic motor oil would be to slippery for a high mileage motor. and mobil 1 is a very good oil compnay especially their synthetic oil's. but the oil tends to burn alot for some reason...especially when you hit vtec. and if you have oil leaks or burn oil, go with a little thicker motor oil.

I use Castrol GTX High Mileage because I've never had a problem what so ever. It's always had Castrol GTX oil so, I figured, why not mess with a good thing,

yea i use mobil 1 full synthetic but i noticed that my oil will burn off alot if i go into vtec. Why do you think that is? I have a healthy motor it just must be something with the make-up of their oil or something. Would going to a thicker oil help to prevent that and will it harm my motor at all because the manual says 5w30 which is pretty thin.

i run mobil one synthetic in my car i noticed it seemed to run quieter after i made the switch but nothing to huge and GSROWNSU the reason you burn oil i belive is cause of the vtec itself doesnt the motor have oil squitters in the cylinders so that when vtec kicks in it shots it right on the cylinder wall

Pretty much all Honda engines seem to burn more oil that the average engine, and the issue is worse in the VTEC engines because they're so high revving.
Your right teggyls, B18C's have oil squirters:

When I did oil changes before my rebuild, only about 2 1/4 to 2 1/2 quarts would drain out after 3K miles. That was on a B18C with 130K on it. Now after my rebuild, about 3 1/2 to 3 3/4 comes out after 3k. Pretty sweet that I don't need to keep an eye on that anymore, well, at least for quite a while. I'm still using conventional oil since my rebuild in January, I've only driven about 4,500 miles since then. Probably gonna switch back over to the Mobil 1 on my next change, 5,000 miles oughta be long enough to break in an engine.

lol yes score one for me i actually know something hahah jk but thats a pretty sweet build you have on your car tegsox and for it to go thru so little oil is good i mean you gotta expect some burn off with a higher compression and the cams an all

actually, break ins usually only last about a thousand miles or less, depending on driving style. all you need to do is seat the rings. which means you get the piston rings to set into the cylinder walls, giving a good seal.

i personally use Redline 20w-50. though i need it due to occasionally road racing and auto-x my car. i was using Honda 5w-30 for break in, and i kept using it. i went on a 20 minute session at Phoenix Intl Raceway. my oil pressure dropped from 20 psi at idle to 10 psi at idle. so i need something more heat resistant, and less likely to thin out. therefore synthetic and higher weight, respectively.

i have heard that you cant use regular oil if youve got synthetic in it. but ive also heard that you can go back when you do your oil change.

i pay 7 bucks a quart of oil. and its worth it. though because i did not get the car tuned when i was breaking it in (broke in on a stock P75 map with open loop) the oil rings arent scraping enough oil off the cylinder walls, so i burn oil. about 1 quart every 500 miles. i still hold 230-240 compression across the board. though i dont feel like tearing down my motor just to replace some rings. although i would like to take a look at the bearings for shits and giggles.

ok, im done, enough babble

I heard alot of different opinions on how long a break in takes, and how you should drive during the break in, and so on. Even my mechanic couldn't give me a definitive number or range. He also says some people drive the car as they normally would, some baby it, some kick its ass. So I decided to drive it normal....mostly sane with a little fun sprinkled in. He did say to vary the rpm's as much as possible in the very beginning, so I tried to do that, shifted at different areas of the rpm range and laid off the cruise control. I know 5,000 miles is surely past normal break in time, but I figured staying with the conventional oil won't be a bad thing, and it's less expensive in the meantime, hehe.
